Description
R-454B is a next-generation refrigerant, also known as Puron Advance or Opteon XL41, designed to replace R-410A in HVAC systems. It’s a blend of R-32 and R-1234yf and has a significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than R-410A, making it a more environmentally friendly option. While it’s classified as mildly flammable (A2L), it’s considered safe with proper handling and installation. (Purchase Does Not Include A2L Adapter)
Key Features of R-454B:
Lower GWP:
R-454B has a GWP of 466, compared to R-410A’s GWP of 2088, meaning it has a much smaller impact on climate change.
Similar Performance:
It’s designed to offer similar cooling and heating performance to R-410A, with some systems even seeing improved seasonal efficiency.
Mildly Flammable:
R-454B is classified as A2L, meaning it’s mildly flammable, but it’s still considered safe when handled according to safety guidelines.
Drop-in Replacement (with Considerations):
While it can be a near drop-in replacement for R-410A in many cases, some system modifications might be necessary, especially for older equipment.
Transitioning to R-454B:
Many HVAC manufacturers are phasing in R-454B in their new systems, in response to regulations phasing out R-410A.
Supply Chain Issues:
Due to increased demand and some production and supply chain challenges, there have been some shortages and price increases for R-454B.
